05) PAPERCRAFT:RESEARCH

Paper craft duo zim & zou (Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmerman) are French artists. Since Lucie’s family worked at a paper factory in Vosges Mountains, France, they have been familiar with paper since childhood. duo zim & zou studied graphic design together and changed their field to papercraft.

 

Zim & zou usually works with the focus of handcrafting for visual Widow display installation, rather than digital elements, when approaching work. It was attractive to me that zim & zou, who lives in an era where it is difficult to even work on basic documents without digital technology, envisioned work based on handcrafted materials, not digital. zim & zou is said to prefer paper the most among many handcrafted materials because paper is versatile and easy to carve, and it is very rich in color and texture.

Zim & zou also prefers complex and time-consuming designs and uses a lot of colorful and bold colors to stand out for such designs. However, their work is not only colorful and complex, but also more compelling stories are contained in their work, which makes it possible to feel the depth of the work.




I could get a lot of inspiration by watching zim & zou's work. I've thought that the most important thing about paper art is the details of the work and the colorful skills. However, zim & zou's works have tremendous detail and style, but he learned that what gives life to those skills and styles is persuasive storytelling. For example, one of zim & zou's works, Windows Display Works for Dubai Hermes, each paper piece is filled with small letters, one with a large mushroom tower, and the other with a lotus flower in bloom. If you carefully examine these works, you will be curious about the stories of people and fairies living in the small paper village.

 

Lastly, let's wrap up the blog posting with the advice zim & zou gave for young creators. 


1. Always understand exactly why you like and dislike something.

2. Don't be afraid to make mistakes and start again. Mistakes make you grow.

3. Once you know what you want to do, ask yourself what new things you can bring and what makes you different from other creators.

09) PAPER CRAFT OBJECTS:FINAL REVISION

This week is the week when the Paper Craft Object project ends.  I made a more advanced version of the paper stalactites based on the prototype I made the week before last. The prototype version of the paper stalactite doesn't seem like in a cave, so I designed the final version of the paper stalactite by changing the organic lines into a deeper, pointed curve.  And I made two drops of water to make it seem like water is falling from the stalactite. - the process of making paper stalactites - Completed paper stalactites - Paper stalactites according to various lights - Prototype vs final Unlike the version made in rhino, it is regrettable that the paper stalactites have become a little longer overall. I think it would be much better if I revised that part. It was a good idea to choose pastel-toned paper centered on purple to give a mysterious feeling. OBJECTIFIED: RESPONSE - Sewing machine    Watching interviews with many designers on  the OBJECTIFIED , I felt that good design eventually comes from in-depth observations of 'people'.    In the film, great designs are everyday things (OBJECTIFIED 10:13) and get better with use. When I heard this, I remembered an object I had read in a book before: the sewing machine of Kenneth Grange.   Before Kenneth Grange's sewing machine, most sewing machines had all corners angled and the needle's position was always centred. 10,11) 3D PRINTED HALLOW FORM OBJECT:THE HYBRID

This week's assignment was to create a new hybrid object of object by combining the object I made and the object of my partner. - My first 6 objects When I heard the topic of this assignment, I thought about creating objects using many Rhino tools that I have learned in class.  So it was good to review many Rhino tools such as rotate, loft, join, cut, etc. other than taper and twist that I learned most recently. - the object that I choose creating hybrid object. This object seemed to be able to stand alone without the help of others, and it also seemed easier to print when this object was actually 3d printing than other objects I created. I chose the object because I thought it was aesthetically good because the edges of the object were not round and sharp. - Ericka's first 6 objects - Ericka's  I thought the objects in both of us looked great, especially Erica's tentacle objects were great ideas.
